Despite a competitive run by dark horse Venezuela, host country Costa Rica’s Carlos Muñoz vaulted into contention for a world title at the World Surfing Games in Playa Hermosa Tuesday.

A giant Parade of the Surfing Nations began the opening ceremonies of the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games at Jaco Beach this morning. In full “Olympic” style, over 34 nations in bright uniforms and flags flying, followed a colorful Costa Rican marching band down the main street of town, to the exited cheers of thousands posted along the parade route.

The ISA Billabong World Surfing Games will take place in Playa Hermosa, south of Jaco on July 31 to August 9, 2009. The Billabong World Surfing Games (WSG) 2009 is expected to have the largest number of competing countries which will total 40. JACO & HERMOSA RECEIVE BLUE FLAG
For the second consecutive year, the city of Jaco recently received the Blue Flag award along with the surfing beach of Playa Hermosa, the site of the BILLABONG ISA 2009 WORLD SURFING GAMES.
In order to receive the Blue Flag award, the quality of water, the solid waste management systems, the signaling of roads, the environmental education and public safety are all evaluated.
